  27. Ordering the retail version of PhotoStyler 1.1a

  33. card included in your package).

  38. Features included in PhotoStyler 1.1a
  39. =======================================
  40.  
  41. Aldus PhotoStyler 1.1a incorporates a number of feature enhancements,
  42. a JPEG image compression module, a raw data format module,
  43. updated Epson and Nikon scanner drivers, and an updated Kodak export 
  44. module.
  45.  
  46. - Additional TARGA data type
  47.   PhotoStyler can now open and save grayscale images in the TARGA format.
  48.  
  49. - Printer marks
  50.   The new "Include printer marks" checkbox in the "Page Setup" dialog box
  51.   causes PhotoStyler to print crop marks, registration marks, a 
  52.   calibration bar, and (for color images) a color bar along with 
  53.   the image. This new checkbox takes the place of the old "Include 
  54.   crop marks" and "Include calibration bar" checkboxes.

  56. - Improved performance
  57.   Performance has been improved in several areas, most notably 
  58.   cutting, copying, and pasting via the Clipboards, operation of 
  59.   painting tools, and display of images onscreen. In addition, 
  60.   the speed of opening and saving images using LZW compression 
  61.   has been greatly improved.
  62.  
  63. - Opening files
  64.   Several enhancements make it easier and faster to open files in 
  65.   PhotoStyler 1.1a:
  66.     
  67.     - PhotoStyler now lists the most recently opened filenames 
  68.       at the bottom of the File menu for faster access. To open 
  69.       a file directly from the File menu, click its filename. 
  70.        Note that you can open only a single file at a time by 
  71.       this method.
  72.  
  73.     - You can now open multiple files in one operation. In the 
  74.       "Open Image File" dialog box, select a group of filenames 
  75.         by clicking the top name, then holding down the Shift key 
  76.       and clicking the bottom name. Or select discontiguous 
  77.       filenames by holding down the Ctrl key as you click. 
  78.       Alternatively, you can type the names of the files you 
  79.       want to open, separating each name by a space. Click "OK" 
  80.       to open all selected files. To cancel the opening of
  81.       all remaining selected files, hold down Shift and press 
  82.       the Esc key.

  84.     - The new "All formats" file extension option in the "Open 
  85.       Image File" dialog box lets you choose from a list of all 
  86.       PhotoStyler-compatible files, regardless of file type.
  87.  
  88. - Closing files
  89.   New shortcuts enable you in a single operation to close all open 
  90.   images without saving or to exit from PhotoStyler without saving 
  91.   open images.
  92.  
  93.     - To close all open images without saving, hold down the 
  94.       Shift key and choose "Close" from the File menu.
  95.  
  96.     - To exit from PhotoStyler without saving multiple open 
  97.       images, hold down the Shift key and choose "Exit" from 
  98.       the File menu. Alternatively, you can hold down the Shift 
  99.       key and double-click the control menu box at the upper 
  100.       left corner of the PhotoStyler application window.

  102. - Context-sensitive online help available for dialog boxes
  103.   You can now display context-sensitive online help for a dialog box 
  104.   by pressing the F1 key when the dialog box is open.
  105.  
  106. - Updated scanner driver
  107.   The updated Epson scanner driver now supports use of the Epson
  108.   scanners with IBM PS/2 computers.
  109.  
  110. - Updated Kodak export module
  111.   The Kodak export module has been updated to support the Kodak 
  112.   XLT7720 printer. 
  113.     
  114. - JPEG image compression
  115.   JPEG is a standard method of compressing continuous-tone images 
  116.   while saving them, resulting in a smaller file size. Photo-
  117.   Styler 1.1a enables you to save a Grayscale or RGB True Color 
  118.   image in a compressed form on disk, then decompress the image 
  119.   when you want to work on it. For detailed online information 
  120.   about the JPEG import/export module, highlight the JPEG 
  121.   compression command on either the "Import" or "Export" 
  122.   submenu on the File menu, then press the F1 key.

  124. - Raw format images
  125.   Some types of medical imaging and other scientific equipment 
  126.   (such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines, scanning laser 
  127.   microscopes, x-ray machines, and LANDSAT satellites) can create 
  128.   images in the form of raw binary data. PhotoStyler 1.1a provides 
  129.   an import/export module that enables you to open non-interlaced 
  130.   raw image files in PhotoStyler if you know some information about 
  131.   the file, such as the image height and width in pixels, whether 
  132.   the image file has a header, etc. You can also export images 
  133.   from PhotoStyler 1.1a in the form of a raw data file for use in 
  134.   other applications that do not support standard file formats. The 
  135.   "Raw Format Image..." commands appear on the "Import" and "Export"
  136.   submenus on the File menu only if you have installed the Raw Image 
  137.   Data Format import/export module (RAWIMAGE.EXE). For detailed 
  138.   online information about the raw data format, press the F1 key 
  139.   while the "Raw Format Image..." command is highlighted.

  144. Installing compressed files
  145. =======================================
  146.  
  147. Your Aldus PhotoStyler disk set contains files that have been 
  148. compressed to save disk space. These files contain the tilde (~) 
  149. character as part of their filename extension. These files are 
  150. automatically decompressed by the PhotoStyler installation program, 
  151. at which point they are automatically renamed to their standard 
  152. filename.

  156. Installing the Sharp or Nikon scanner driver
  157. =======================================
  158.  
  159. If you choose to install either the Sharp or the Nikon scanner 
  160. driver BEFORE you have installed the required General Purpose 
  161. Interface Bus (GPIB) board and its associated software, you will 
  162. receive an error message stating "Cannot find GPIB.DLL" each time 
  163. you start PhotoStyler. Click the "OK" button to continue. The 
  164. absence of the GPIB file will not prevent you from using PhotoStyler,
  165. however, you will not be able to use the scanner until you have 
  166. installed the scanner, the GPIB board, and the GPIB software. Once 
  167. these are successfully installed, the error message will no longer 
  168. appear.

  170. Note: The Nikon scanner driver shipped with PhotoStyler 1.1a
  171. supports the Nikon LS3500 scanner. If you need the scanner driver
  172. for the Nikon LS3510 scanner, contact the dealer where you
  173. bought your Nikon product. If they cannot help you, contact Nikon's
  174. technical support line at Nikon headquarters in New York, at
  175. 1-516-547-4358.

  179. Installing with the Mona Lisa display card
  180. =============================
  181.  
  182. To install Aldus PhotoStyler on a system that uses a Mona Lisa
  183. display card, you must have a Mona Lisa driver version 1.05
  184. (or higher). If you don't have the appropriate driver, change
  185. the display setting in Windows Setup to VGA before you run 
  186. "pssetup.exe." When the installation is complete, switch the
  187. display setting back to the Mona Lisa driver.

  191. Network operation
  192. =====================================================

  194. If you have trouble using PhotoStyler in a network environment,
  195. (for example, if the double dot ".." does not appear at the top of
  196. the directory list box in the "Open" dialog box), please refer to
  197. the file "NETWORKS.TXT" in your Windows 3.0 directory.

  201. Updating PhotoStyler
  202. =======================================
  203.  
  204. If you want to update part, but not all, of PhotoStyler (for 
  205. example, to change to a different scanner driver), run PSSETUP.EXE 
  206. and select the "Update" option. You must correctly enter the path 
  207. to the PhotoStyler directory. When you have completed updating the 
  208. selected file(s), click "Exit" to return to the program manager.

  212. ============================
  213. File Formats -- Resolution
  214. ============================
  215.  
  216. Files saved from some applications that use the old .PCX format 
  217. (that follow specifications dated before Dec 12, 1990) are saved 
  218. with a different type of "resolution" information. In addition, 
  219. the GIF and TGA file formats do not retain resolution information. 
  220. If you have files that were saved in one of these formats, and the 
  221. resolution of the file is important to you, open the file in Aldus 
  222. PhotoStyler, resample to the resolution you want, then save in 
  223. another file format.

  227. File Formats -- EPS files for Macintosh
  228. =======================================
  229.  
  230. If you choose to save your file in the Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) 
  231. format, PhotoStyler gives you the choice of ASCII or Binary. If you 
  232. intend to use your EPS file in a Macintosh application, we recommend 
  233. that you choose the "ASCII" option, and save the file without a 
  234. preview image.

  238. Mask limitation
  239. ======================

  243. To be used as a mask, an image must contain at least one pixel with 
  244. a grayscale value of 128 or greater. If the image that you attempt 
  245. to use as a mask does NOT contain any graysale values in the 
  246. permissible range, PhotoStyler will display an error message 
  247. informing you that the operation cannot be done.

  251. Plug-in filters
  252. =========================

  254. A maximum of 60 plug-in filters can be used with PhotoStyler.

  259. Setting page size for printing from a PostScript dump
  260. =====================================================
  261.  
  262. If you experience difficulty in printing a PostScript dump file 
  263. to the proper page size (for example, in printing the PostScript 
  264. file to an imagesetter), follow these steps AFTER you have created 
  265. your file:
  266.  
  267. 1. Select "Printer Setup..." from the File menu.
  268. 2. In the "Printer Setup" dialog box, click the "Setup..." button.
  269. 3. In the printer-specific dialog box, choose options for 
  270. "Printer," "Paper Size," etc.
  271. 4. Click the "Options..." button.
  272. 5. In the "Options" dialog box, click the "Header..." button.
  273. 6. In the "Header" dialog box, select "Printer."
  274. 7. Click "OK" to close each dialog box.
  275. 8. If you need crop marks or calibration bars, choose "Page 
  276. Setup..." from the File menu, then make the appropriate selections.
  277. 9. Select "Print..." from the file menu and print the file.

  281. Separating PhotoStyler images through Aldus PrePrint
  282. =====================================================
  283.  
  284. If you have trouble separating an Aldus PageMaker publication
  285. that contains PhotoStyler TIFF images through Aldus PrePrint 
  286. 1.5, open the TIFF image(s) in PrePrint before you separate 
  287. the publication. Leave the image window(s) open while you 
  288. print separations of the publication.
  289.

  292. Running STACKER with PhotoStyler
  293. =====================================================
  294.  
  295. The following are steps you can take to avoid possible
  296. problems with PhotoStyler if you are using the disk-
  297. compression utility STACKER:  
  298.  
  299. 1. Swap files
  300.    When setting up STACKER, you can leave disk space
  301.    uncompressed for storing of system files. If you will
  302.    be using a swap file, it must be set up on the 
  303.    uncompressed drive. To work with an image, PhotoStyler
  304.    requires a swap file space at least double the size of
  305.    the image itself. If you get "Disk full" error messages
  306.    even when your compressed drive indicates that there 
  307.    is sufficient room for the active file, check that your
  308.    permanent swap file (or the uncompressed drive containing
  309.    your temporary swap file) is large enough to hold twice
  310.    the image size.
  311.  
  312. 2. CONFIG.SYS
  313.    During STACKER installation, a SSWAP line may have been 
  314.    added to your CONFIG.SYS file to substitute the drive 
  315.    letter of your physical hard drive for the letter of
  316.    STACKER's logical drive. If this is the case, any lines
  317.    added for PhotoStyler-related devices must come after
  318.    the SSWAP line. If you install certain PhotoStyler drivers 
  319.    that require additions to your CONFIG.SYS file, you will
  320.    be alerted to that fact by the PSSETUP installation program,
  321.    which will give you the option of updating CONFIG.SYS 
  322.    automatically or updating the file yourself after the 
  323.    installation is complete. Whether you allow PSSETUP to 
  324.    automatically update your CONFIG.SYS file, or you make
  325.    the modification yourself, you should check to make sure
  326.    that the added device line(s) are positioned after the
  327.    STACKER-related SSWAP line.

  331. Printing error under Windows 3.1
  332. =====================================================
  333.  
  334. Microsoft has fixed a problem existing in the universal
  335. printer driver shipped with Windows 3.1. This problem 
  336. caused a "General Application Error" (GAE) when printing 
  337. from PhotoStyler to some printers that use the universal 
  338. printer driver (such as the Hewlett-Packard PaintJet). 
  339. The error will occur with this printer driver if the 
  340. "Halftone by Printer" option is selected in PhotoStyler's 
  341. "Page Setup" dialog box. The fixed version of Microsoft's 
  342. Windows 3.1 universal driver is available on the WDL 
  343. (Windows Driver Library) disk available on CompuServe
  344. or from Microsoft.
